My brand new podcast is here! HF #001: What does it mean to be a homemaker?

on June 2, 2015 by Jami Balmet 13 comments

Welcome to my brand new podcast: The Homemaking Foundations PodcastWhere we give you the tools, inspiration, and encouragement you need to craft a Gospel-Centered Home. This podcast has been in the works for over a year (yeah – we ordered the microphone and equipment needed LAST December). And I am so over the moon excited that we are finally launching season 1 which will run from June 2nd until mid-December.

HF #1- What Does it Mean to Be a Homemaker - Pinterest

So join me back here every Tuesday for a new episode of the Homemaking Foundations podcast! This first episode kicks off  defining what a homemaker is – and then we will move into all different aspects of homemaking, Biblical womanhood, marriage, and so much more. You can sign up to get an email when the podcast is posted each week.

What is a Podcast?

You can find all the show notes below – but I know that not everyone is familiar with what a podcast is. So I want to briefly cover what a podcast is and how you can listen along. Read about my favorite podcast’s I listen to here.

A podcast is basically like a weekly online radio show. You can subscribe to the podcast through iTunes, sign up for my email updates, or follow along right here on the blog. Like I said, we will cover all aspects of Gospel-Centered Homemaking and I will be bringing on many amazing guests to share their wisdom and advice on homemaking. Check back for episode #2 for our first guest!

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • What the real definition of a homemaker is
  • Do you have to be a wife and/or mom to be a homemaker?
  • Learning how to be a more efficient and effective homemaker
  • Letting things go and becoming more disciplined
  • How (and why) to learn from other women

Episode summary

Before we launch into various aspects of homemaking in later episodes of this podcast, I wanted to first kick off by laying a firm foundation of what a homemaker is. So as I sat down to start writing the notes for this podcast, I decided that instead, I would just share my first session from the Homemaking From Scratch Online Conference that we had back in October. I knew that if I tried to re-record this same content, it wouldn’t come out as well the second time.

So feel free to ignore the references to the conference – or if you want to check it out, you can still download the full conference, notes, and bonuses HERE – and instead focus on the core message: What defines a Biblical Homemaker?

I want to challenge you to think outside the box a little when it comes to being a homemaker. I don’t think that a homemaker is something you become, but rather, something that you are.

“As so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working-at-home, kind, and submissive, that the word of God may not be reviled.” – Titus 2:4-5

    • Sorry Beth, it’s not displaying in iTunes yet. They said it could take up to 48 hours from when we first submit our first episode. But hopefully it won’t take that long! I’ll update when it’s available πŸ™‚ In the meantime, you can listen to the podcast directly from this pist above! Thanks!!

  1. Hi Jami,

I guess you could say I’m a lurker :), but I’ve tried searching for you on my podcast app under both “Jami Balmet” and “the homemaking foundations podcast” several times and it always says there’s no result.

    Looking forward to listening!

    • Sorry Maria! I jumped the gun in saying you could subscribe to itunes in this post. We are waiting on itunes approval (which could take up to 48 hours but we are hoping will be sooner)!! I will update once it’s ready…but try again soon and either my name or the podcast name will bring it up! Thanks!! In the meantime, you can listen to the podcast right from this post if you scroll up to the top.

  2. I absolutely loved your podcast, Jami! I’m a single 20 year old living at home with my family preparing to be a homemaker one day, and I was so encouraged and challenged while listening to you share. Often I get discouraged in my role and because the world doesn’t promote the home or family and working in the home, it just gets hard at times. But I am so thankful for this podcast- and I so cannot wait for next week’s podcast! I have a feeling this is going to be a weekly highlight and favorite! And one that I’m definitely going to share about on my own blog, as I know other will be encouraged and challenged as well πŸ™‚ Thank you so much for all the work you are putting into these podcasts, and for your wisdom and sweet spirit when sharing!

    Many blessings,

  3. Just listened to the podcast today, and I loved it. Perfect to listen to while doing some chores around the house. Very encouraging, I can’t wait for more πŸ™‚

  4. Hi Jami, I was looking for the notes mentioned in the podcast and typed in the address you gave and it took me to the actual blog post…did I miss it someplace?

BTW, I enjoy your posts, you are very encouraging to all trying to be the best they can be. And congrats on the new littles.

  5. Hi Jami! I’ve been listening to your podcasts but there haven’t been any new ones since July 7th. Have you stopped doing them?

    • Hi Andrea! Thanks so much for listening!! YES – the next episode is coming tomorrow August 4th πŸ™‚ We took off a few weeks when our twins were born but we are back at it again this week!

  6. Hi Jami! I’m a single mom and wanted to say THANK YOU because I find these podcasts so encouraging and filled with good ideas for me, which surprised me. Kind of silly since your site is “young WIFES guide” and I am not a wife anymore. After such a hard season when my husband left, I thought this homemaker role was lost to me for good. But the Lord has shown me He still has plans for me – going back to school to become a nurse and serve Him in that capacity as well as raising my little family – me and my son! I am nearing podcast 8 but wanted to come back and tackle one or two sessions at a time each month more in depth to really start implimenting some of the things you are discussing. Thank you again for being inclusive of more than just the married stay at home mama but all of us moms/women/etc. πŸ™‚

  7. Hi Jami
