Top 10 Favorite Essential Oils

on September 10, 2013 by Jami Balmet 0 comments

This week we have been taking a look at what essential oils are and today I would like to get practical and share my top 10 favorite oils {so far}.

My top 10 favorite essential oils

Of course this list may change {and probably will} in the future as I learn more how to use essential oils. But here are my top 10 most used essential oils in my home. If you are confused and want to learn more about essential oils then read my introduction to essential oils.

My Favorite Essential Oils

The main reasons I wanted to use essential oils in the beginning was to use in home remedies and to clean my house. So these essential oils revolve around that concept: natural cleaning & home remedies! You can purchase all these essential oils in a discounted family physician kit {learn more from Modern Wellness}.

Peppermint

I frequently get headaches so peppermint has quickly become one of my favorite oils! Peppermint has a very cooling effect and is great to combine with  lavender and bentonite clay to form a paste that works great on poison oak, bug bites, and more!

Lavender

Lavender is very soothing and has powerful calming properties. Lavender works really well to help you fall asleep at night as it helps calm anxiety, soothe emotions, and helps you to fall asleep. Lavender is a must have in our house!

Lemon

This is my go to oil for all things cleaning! It cuts through grime and grease and you can use it in so many ways as cleaners for your kitchen and house. You can also diffuse lemon into your room to help prufiy the air and eliminate nasty odors – like diapers!

Melaleuca {or Tea Tree Oil}

We use to use this oil in our house back when I was a kid and didn’t even realize it! When I got my first bottle of melaleuca, I opened it up to smell it and it brought back a flood of memories. It’s still one of my favorite smells to this day! Every couple of washes, I add tea tree oil to my load of cloth diapers to help get rid of germs and odors.

Oregano

For some reason I thought this was a funny oil when I first got it. I just don’t think of oregano as being an oil – but I’m sure glad I got it! Oregano has powerful immune support properties and is a must have oil in times of sickness and when colds and flus are going around. We like to dilute it and rub it on the bottoms of our feet to help bolster immunity!

Frankincense

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear this oil? For me, it’s the story of Jesus’s birth! If you remember, one of the gifts that the wise men gave to Jesus at his birth was frankincense! In ancient times this oil was highly prized and expensive – and that hasn’t changed in our modern times except we have better methods for extracting it now. When in doubt, use frankincense because it works for so many different things!

Deep Blue

Deep Blue is actually a blend of several oils that provides relief and soothing to muscles and joints. Deep Blue is a blend of “Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, German Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus.” One of my favorite ways that my husband can serve me is by giving me a backrub. For years we have used an oil rub from Bath and Body Works that I loved – but then I met Deep Blue and it’s the only thing we use now!

Between working on the computer any second my boys are sleeping and after they go to bed, slugging around two growing baby boys, and a bad back that I inherited from my Dad, massages are a must for me some days! And Deep Blue really helps to relax my muscles and provide much needed relief. Deep Blue is an oil blend offered by doTerra.

Breathe

This is another oil blend that is offered by doTerra. Thankfully since I began using essential oils, I have not had to use this one yet. But as we are heading into cold and flu season, I know this will be an oil we have out all the time. Especially to use for my growing boy!

Breathe blend helps clears up lungs and sinuses without using nasty chemicals found in modern cold and flu medicine. Plus it’s hard enough for me to sleep at night when I have a cold, let along my poor children when they can’t breathe. You can add breathe blend to a diffuser or humidifier to help breathing during the night.

Digestzen

This is also an oil blend offered by doTerra. I am so looking forward to using this oil for my next pregnancy as it helps soothe morning sickness! I had a terrible time with morning sickness and with two toddlers running around I will need all the relief I can get!

Another great way to use this blend is to run it on the bottoms of feet to help ease digestion. My husband likes using this one because his body doesn’t naturally digest very well.

On Guard

This oil blend offered by doTerra has probably been my most used oil recently. Sickness has started going around in our town so I’ve preemptively been running On Guard onto my families feet to help boost immunity. This oil blend also works as an excellent air purifier to help eliminate airborn pathogens. Our family loves this blend!

Slim and Sassy

Okay this is a bonus oil blend I want to tell you about because not everyone will find use for this oil blend from doTerra but we love it!  This is a metabolic blend is specially designed to help control hunger and to help limit excessive calorie intake. According to Modern Essentials, “The oils in this blend are calming to the stomach and work to improve emotional well-being” pg 97.

I don’t know about you but I am always skeptical of weight loss supplements or products so I’m am so excited to know what’s in this blend. It’s made up of: grapefruit, lemon, peppermint, ginger and cinnamon oils. All of which are very healthy for your system!!
