Setting a CHRISTmas Atmosphere in Your Home

on November 18, 2016 by Jami Balmet 1 comment

I don’t know about you, but this Fall has been FLYING by. I can’t believe we are almost to Thanksgiving already. We have baby #5 due the week after Christmas and part of me already feels like Christmas is flying by too quickly.

Christmas is getting close! Have you given much thought to crafting the atmosphere in your home this Christmas season? Here are all of my favorite ways to do so.

I want to savor this season. I want to build special memories for our four boys. I want to slow down and be able to focus on Christ and the Gospel throughout the month of December. So I’m preparing early this year and planning ahead.

It has already helped me feel like I’m being more intentional with this season that tends to fly by so quickly. So I’m excited today to pass along all my favorite things to help set the CHRISTmas atmosphere in your home. You’ve still got plenty of time to implement these things.

Christmas 2015 at the Balmet household! It’s amazing how much growth can happen in one year 😀 Looking forward to our Christmas morning picture 2016!!

The Scents of Christmas

So many of our memories are tied to scents. Plus, it just makes your home feel so warm and cozy. Christmas scents are my absolute favorites of the year. Here’s what we use and love:

Roxanna’s Candles

My husband loves candles. But did you know that most candles are highly toxic? They are full of fake and synthetic ingredients that can even be cancerous! Ouch!!

I made Jason go without candles for a long time because I just couldn’t find a natural candle company that provided 1) affordable candles 2) candles that small amazing and 3) candles that last a long time and the scent hangs around for a while. But last year I finally found my very favorite candle company EVER.

Ignore the poor lighting..it’s HARD to get a good photo of a lit candle 😉

Roxanna’s Candles are non-toxic (you can learn more about what’s inside on their website) and smell amazing! Plus their customer service team is outstanding. They are a small business so I really feel like I’m being taken care of (plus, I love supporting other small businesses, especially around Christmas time).

Our favorite Roxanna’s Candles scents include:

  • Pumpkin Spice Latte
  • Blue Spruce (Our favorite for Christmas!!)
  • Cinnamon Stick
  • Pumpkin Pie

But I can’t wait to try out the other scents as we run out and need to order more. Check out Roxanna’s Candles here

Plant Therapy Christmas Oils

I just ordered Plant Therapy’s new Christmas oils. I haven’t actually used them yet (but will update here once I do). But I am a HUGE Plant Therapy fan and have loved their Fall scents (they do still have a few Fall scents in stock if you want those too). I don’t think the Christmas scents will disappoint.

We just ordered the Holiday Blend 6 Oil Set which includes:

  • Candy Cane Holiday Blend
  • Christmas Tree Holiday Blend
  • Gingerbread Holiday Blend
  • Merry Mistletoe Holiday Blend
  • Winter Wonderland Holiday Blend
  • Snow Flurries Holiday Blend
  • **We also ordered their brand new diffuser which looks AWESOME and a great price.**

Christmas Books I Recommend

Hidden Christmas: The Surprising Truth Behind the Birth of Christ by Timothy Keller

This is a new book that I just got this year and I LOVE it. It’s a pretty quick read but really gets right to the heart of Christmas and why we celebrate Christ’s birth. If you want a deeper understanding for yourself (and so you can better teach your kids), then I highly recommend this book.

“To understand Christmas is to understand basic Christianity, the Gospel.” – Hidden Christmas, page 4.

Here’s my cute assistant – Malachi!

Treasuring God in Your Traditions by Noel Piper

When I originally got this book, I thought there would be a lot more on Christmas. But there’s only a chapter or two actually dedicated to Christmas. However, it’s a great over view of establishing traditions for your family and ideas for doing so.

I always LOVE adding to this list! So now it’s YOUR turn, what are all your favorite Christmas-related things? Leave a comment below!

  1. We’re doing advent calendar and wreath/candles this year again which I grew up with as a child (no, we’re not Catholic but I am told this is a Catholic tradition?). Also, my aunt passed along the idea of buying a kids Christmas book for each year/child and we tried continuing that this year! It’s fun to have them set up in the living room and brings to mind the Christ child since they’re at eye level for the kids! We enjoy reading them throughout the days leading to Christmas. Love the ideas! Glad to have heard about the candles, we’re just becoming aware of all the toxins and carcinogens out there–and we love candles!!
