Remembering Christ When You Decorate Your Home

on December 12, 2015 by Jami Balmet 0 comments

With everything I do in my home, I want to be intentional. Before I spend money or take the time to invest in doing something, I want to take a step back and make sure it’s really worth it.

Sure, sometimes it’s nice to stop and get a latte just for the fun of it. There’s no eternal significance in occasionally grabbing a yummy cup of coffee. But for most of the things that take time and money – I want to make sure we have a greater purpose behind them – a Gospel purpose.

So you see, the subject of decorating my home has become one thats been on my mind a lot in the last few years. We moved into our first home nearly two years ago and I really love to decorate.

Thinking through Christmas decorations

I spent time picking out the perfect colors for every wall in our home (it was in serious need of repainting), we had to put in new carpet, I spray painted mirrors, and hunted for the perfect paintings for our walls. As I was investing time and money into this, I got to a point that I had to take a step back to make sure I was investing in something worth while.

And through my studying and reading, I came to the point where I realized that decorating my home could be for God’s glory if done with the right heart, or it could all be in vain and pretty pointless.

I know some of the home decor I’ve done has purely been for fun (such as painting Gotham City across my toddlers super hero room). And as long as I’m not neglecting my family or spending huge amounts of money (that we don’t have) in the process – that’s totally fine!

So as we got out the Christmas decorations this year, I had to apply this thinking once again.

Decorating for Christmas with CHRIST in Mind

Our older twins are turning three the day after Christmas and this year, they are really starting to pay attention and remember things.

So as we got our tree up, started decorating with ornaments, and hanging lights – Jason and I had several talks about how we can best point them (and ourselves) back to Christ with everything we do.

And while there are many things we can (and should) do this Christmas season to point our entire household back to the Gospel and to Christ – we have a special opportunity within our decorating to make Him known!

Even though we have been married now for over six years, we are still slowly building our Christmas decorations. This is only our second Christmas in our current home and our boys are just now starting to get “Christmas”.

Loving our new pillows!

And because we don’t have a lot of room in our budget for new Christmas decorations, we are going to slowly focus on getting one or two new things each year that are focused on Christ.

On my wish list still is: a nice advent calendar where we can read new scriptures each day (for now we use a free printed one), Christmas wall art with Scripture, and a few more things that allow us to decorate and focus on Christ.

I got two things this year: a new table cloth and pillows! My new tablecloth has phrases all over it including: Joy to the World, Merry Christmas, Peace on Earth, etc.  (Plus it’s a dark table cloth which works well with four messy boys!)

Christian Decor from Loving Kindness

And my newest favorite Christmas items we added this year: My new pillows from Loving Kindness! It’s a new Esty store that focuses on Christian home decor that I just find out about. And I’m happy to be a guinea pig for you, because when you order something like pillows from an online store, you just never know what you are going to get!

But I am very pleased with the quality of these pillows – and the message that they bring to our living room. You can tell these are quality made and I’m excited because I think these will last many more Christmases to come!

I picked out four pillows from their black and gold collection but they have other beautiful collections and colors as well. You can see their entire line of Christmas home decor here.

Their pillows are my favorite – but they also have cards and art prints you can buy!

I’m really glad I found their Etsy store when I did because we desperately need some new pillows for the rest of the year too and I can’t wait to pick out a few that they have!! Here are a few of my favorites that I’ve had my eye on:

You can still order for Christmas!

I know we are already getting close to Christmas – but theres still some time left to order your pillows or art work in time to enjoy them this year (we usually leave our Christmas decorations up through New Years). Plus, I am so excited that we ordered these pillows this year and will be able to enjoy them again and again.

Their Christmas collection or everyday art prints and pillows would also make terrific presents! I know a few newlyweds in my life that would love some of these items!

Now it’s your turn! How do you decorate with Christ in mind?
