Our Trim Healthy Mama Plan for November

on October 8, 2015 by Jami Balmet 20 comments

I have been a fan of Trim Healthy Mama for several years now. I first got the book and read through this plan back when my first set of twins were born.

I loved it and at the time, Trim Healthy Mama was my #1 resource I recommended to women who wanted to learn more about healthy eating (especially if you are new to the whole real food journey). But I’ll be honest, this almost 700 page self-published book is daunting.

It’s huge, it’s not organized well, and there are NO pictures (which is a huge turn off to me in a cookbook). But it’s still had a special place on my cookbook book shelf. But I’ll be honest, I haven’t got it out or opened it up in a while…

My second set of twins are now 3 months old and I’ve got the last of this baby weight clinging on. It’s stubborn and Jason and I both decided we would commit to a few months of really trying to work on losing weight together. We decided we would do a few months of Whole30 since they had a nice handy new book that came out – but the Whole30 is NOT an easy meal plan to follow (especially when you have 4 kids under 3 years old).

And then…

Trim Healthy Mama came out with two brand new books. This time around they are beautifully designed, published, edited, expanded, and contains tons of FULL color pictures of the recipes!!!

Our THM Plan for November

So now, Jason and I are committing to follow Trim Healthy Mama during the month of November. And then we will go from there. But I am beyond excited to have these brand new books that will make it so much easier.

Currently I’m reading through The Trim Healthy Mama Plan. This is a lot of the same information that’s covered in the original book, but it’s been almost 3 years since I’ve read it so it’s been good to cover it again.

And then I’m starting to go through The Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook and select meals (like the mufflets on page 237 and thm pancakes on page 259) that I can start making now and freeze to help set us up for success in November!

What is Trim Healthy Mama?

So are you curious what exactly Trim Healthy Mama is? It’s s diet plan made by sisters Serene and Pearl. It’s focused on whole, natural foods and cooking healthy meals for your family from scratch without spending too much time or money in the process.

It’s a diet plan that is designed for busy moms and even gives guidelines and tips for pregnant and nursing mamas to stay healthy!

THM Meals

The plan book gives so many amazing details and really helps you to understand how diet and nutrition have an impact on your body. It covers: how hormones affect our weight, the damage that sugar really does to our body, that we don’t need to fear the healthy kinds of fat in our diets, the real role of carbs (and the different kinds of carbs), and more.

Forget the Fad Diets, Join the Food Freedom Movement. Becoming trim and healthy doesn’t have to be difficult or painstaking anymore.  After trying almost every fad diet out there, Serene Allison and Pearl Barrett, creators of the Trim Healthy Mama movement, took matters into their own hands. Through trial and error and much research, they created the Trim Healthy Mama Plan:Keep It Simple. Keep It Sane. Based on the authors’ successful self-published book, this simplified, improved, practical plan shows readers a unique way to lose weight and get healthy by eliminating sugar, and still eating hearty, delicious food. – Trim Healthy Mama Plan

What I Love About THM

1) The Recipes

Trim Healthy Mama relies on healthy, real food that the whole family will eat. Yes, I’ve tried a few recipes that our family didn’t care for, but many more that we love! (And the new cookbook contains over 350 recipes which makes it so easy!)

2) There are not a lot of “rules”

Basically sugar is a big NO and for your meals you try to alternate between S meals (meals which contain healthy fat) and E meals (meals that contain healthy carbs). Once you get the hang of it, it’s actually really easy).

3) You can east dessert!!

The cookbook alone contains 103 recipes under the Sweet Treats category!!! How awesome is that? The plan revolves around eating real food and creating a meal plan that is actually doable to follow. When I can have a treat at night with some coffee, that’s a plan I can follow.

Treats include the super popular chocolate muffin a mug. Yes please!

4) Trim Healthy Mama is EVERYWHERE

If you are looking for more recipes (than the 350 included in the cookbook) then just a quick search on Pinterest or Google will give you hundreds of new recipes and even meal plans already put together FOR YOU!

Also, my favorite online meal planning website, Build a Menu, has a Trim Healthy Mama meal plan option EVERY WEEK. Such an easy way to follow a diet when the recipes, meal plans, and shopping list are created for you.

5) The whole family can follow along

As a busy homemaker, wife, and mom I don’t have time to make different food for each member of the family. So what I love is that when Jason and I are on THM, the whole family can eat along with us.

I’m thinking that as I plan out and get ready for our Trim Healthy November, that I would share about it here on the blog so you can follow along too.

If that would be helpful to you, leave a comment and let me know 🙂

  1. I have heard of THM, but still don’t know much about it. If you avoid sugar, what do you sweeten the desserts with? Fruit? I’d be interested in reading about your nutritional journey in November 🙂

    • Thanks for the comment Heather! I’m a big fan of sweetening desserts with Fruit! And a lot of the recipes are sweetened with Stevia. I like the dessert recipes but I try not to go overboard with the Stevia 🙂 I think you can get a little crazy with it!

  2. Oh yes please!!! I love Trim Healthy Mama and have had great success with it in the past. I just ordered the new cookbook and plan on Amazon and have been back on plan for about a week. I’m feeling amazing already! It would be fun to follow along with your family’s Trim Healthy journey! Congratulations on your beautiful new twins!!! Thank you for all the time and energy you put into the blog and podcast!

    • That’s awesome Stacy!! Okay good, I’ll have to make sure to make some time to share our meals plans and what we are doing 🙂 Thanks for the encouragement today!! 😀

  3. I would love it if you shared more. I have the big book and have read it but never jumped in to do it. I was a little put off about ordering their special sweeteners…do you have them and like them? What special ingredients do you buy for the recipes?

    • Thanks Bridgett! We have already been using Stevia in our house for years. So I use that for the recipes that call for the special sweeteners. But I don’t go overboard on it. I put a little bit in my morning coffee and then I’ll use some for a dessert here and there. I know some people who use the sweeteners in EVERYTHING and kind of go crazy with it haha.

So that’s about it as far as special ingredients. I skip any of the recipes that call for other things that I don’t have. I buy organic liquid stevia from Trader Joes. It’s like $6 for a bottle that lasts us FOREVER! 🙂

And I don’t know if this makes you feel better about it or not, But they didn’t always sell their special sweeteners. They wrote the cookbook and then it got so popular that everyone kept asking them to do a store with the sweeteners and things already made. So then they came out with their own line of products.

And if you already have the big book, you might really LOVE the new cookbook. It’s so easy to use, the sections are broken up really nicely and there are FULL color photos with a ton of the recipes. Which is such a must for me in a cookbook!

      Hope that helps! 😀

  4. I tried THM about a year ago. It was very unsuccessful. I would love to join you. I hope the books are not too expensive. I am still trying to lose baby weight from almost 3 years ago…haha. I have many health issues that make it almost impossible to lose weight. Very frustrating. This should be a fun adventure.

    • If you are familiar with the plan, then I would suggest just getting the cookbook!! It has so many recipes that I think it’s worth it!! 🙂 And if THM doesn’t seem to work for you, I highly suggest looking into Whole30 as well! It’s a bit more strict, but it works so well and is such a healthy diet! On amazon: http://amzn.to/1Oozxpg

  5. I am very excited to hear about your journey. I did THM last year abs LOVED it. I became preganat and didn’t stick to it like I wanted. I am due in 4 weeks and plan to start it again this week before the baby comes and hopefully stay on track. My ONLY issue is I have a dairy allergy as do my 2 kids. So that for me makes some of the recipes I want to try alomst impossible. I have the original book, so I might try looking at the new one and see if anything has changed as far as that goes.. Good luck!! God Bless!

    • Oh that would make it rough 🙁 I wonder if you can look on Pinterest for dairy-free THM recipes! There’s probably other people with that too! Yes – I highly recommend the cookbook. If you are already familiar with the plan, you can probably skip the plan book. But I am so so happy with the new cookbook!!

      • I bought the cookbook and LOVE it!! I have found some awesome blogs through Pinterest that are Dairy, Egg, and Gluten Free… I have been hit and miss with it since the baby was born. But back on it this week.. hope you are doing well and having luck with it during your pregnancy!

  6. Yes please do share! I am back on THM after a two year break. I am hopeful it will work better this time since I know I am gluten intolerant and dairy sensitive and can avoid those things.

  7. Please share your journey in November! Ive had so many failed “diet” attempts, so I was intrigued by your post. I’m interested because it sounds like it teaches you how to lead a healthy lifestyle, not “I can’t have this, can’t have that,” all the while your stomach is growling and you’re grouchy… I ordered myself the book, and plan to join you in November after I read and plan it all out. Thank you :).

  8. Please keep updating on how it goes! I’m really interested in the plan, but it’s a bit of an investment for me to buy both those books. Also, I’ve watched a bunch of their videos, and I’m really put off by the way they constantly bicker. Maybe that’s just me, though, lol.

    • I will update again soon! If you can’t buy both books, then I recommend getting just the cookbook! Since you can find all the details about the plan online, the cookbook is super handy to have right in your kitchen 🙂 Although you can find tons of amazing THM recipes on Pinterest. Oh how funny, I’ve never watched their videos! They are sisters after all 😉

  9. I would love to hear more about your journey in November and about THM. Thank you for your encouraging blog-I love reading it! God bless you!!

  10. That sounds good! I’ve been looking into THM and possibly purchasing a copy. On the healthy living note, have you heard of Making Babies from Bulk Herb Store? If you haven’t, I highly recommend you check it out. I just recently got it and it has tons of healthy (and delicious) recipes and lots of tips and herbal/natural recipes for pregnancy and new babies. I’m really enjoying it!
