Gardening 101 (New Series)

on May 2, 2014 by Jami Balmet 0 comments

Gardening can be an excellent way to save money, eat healthy, and incorporate more vegetables into your diet.

Gardening 101 ~ New Series

My husband and I have been eating healthy for a few years now. We want to make sure that our bodies are nourished and that we have the energy and stamina necessary to serve the Lord. Vegetables are a big part of that and we are continually trying to incorporate more fresh vegetables in our diet.

But vegetables are so expensive, and prices are still on the rise.

For the first time in our marriage we live in a house that has a backyard and I’m so excited to be able to plant a full garden this year but we’ve never had this luxury before. We’ve always lived in an apartment with a small patio and a few years ago I realized that I could actually grow vegetables, out on our patio in containers!

As I made a journey towards healthy living, I started discovering that things like tomatoes could be planted in containers and thrive! So I began wondering if I could maybe grow a few things. I thought I would grow a couple tomatoes and some herbs in my kitchen. To my surprise, I found out that I could grow an entire garden on my patio, and actually grow almost any vegetable that I wanted.

So this series is your introduction to gardening. Whether  you live on five acres and want to plant a full garden, or have a small patio with room for a few containers you will need to start somewhere. I didn’t know anything about gardening before I began this journey and it was hard to find information on where to begin. So here it is for you!

This series will cover everything you need to start gardening including:

  • How to know what to plant where you live
  • When to plant
  • How to care for your plants and transplanting
  • When and how to harvest
  • Organic Gardening 101
  • How to grow an herb garden
  • Canning and keeping vegetables throughout the year

I hope that you enjoy this journey as I have. I will never go back to all store bought vegetables again. Anyone can grow vegetables and herbs, even if you live in a tiny apartment!

So as this journey begins, start to think about what you want to grow. For my family, in the beginning, tomatoes and herbs were our main focus and we have since branched out into cumbers, peppers, green onions and more!

Before we dig into the meat of how to start a garden, I ask that you take a few minutes to prepare your heart. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” This is just as applicable in the garden as it is in the pew on Sunday morning.

What is your purpose in gardening? Why should you spend your valuable time in the garden? Come back Monday as we dive into how to how to know what to plant!
