New Series: Cake Decorating for Beginners

Cake decorating is passion of mine. I took a starter class a while ago and then self-taught myself some wonderful cake decorating techniques. And what I found, cake decorating is not nearly as hard as it looks.

Over the weekend I made an easy cake for our Grandma’s birthday(the BEST tasting cake in the world!!). I shared my progress on the cake on Facebook.

And I got some great comments from all of you about how I made the flowers and the basket weave frosting. I have thought long and hard before about doing a cake decorating series for beginners, but it will take a lot of work.

So I want to make sure that you want a cake decorating series, and more specifically, I want to know what YOU want to learn.

I decided to learn how to decorate cakes because I wanted to be able to make cakes for my kids. I wanted to make a Mario or cars cake for my twins birthdays. I wanted to be able to bless my sister’s with a wedding cake. I wanted to be able to offer it as a ministry to those in my church.

And I want you to be able to do the same thing! Leave a comment and let me know what you want to learn! Do you know the basics and want to learn how to make flowers? Are you a complete beginner and don’t know how to fill a pastry bag (that was my a year ago!!)? Let me know so I can make this series for YOU!

Here are a few cake and cookies I have done in the short time since I started learning cake decorating:

Some of my first cakes:

Some of my favorite cakes:

18th Birthday Strawberry Cake!

I think this is my favorite cake! Baby shower cake with a bassinet cake on top for the couple to take home :)

I won 2nd place at the Los Angeles County Fair with this Kitchen theme cake! Everything on this cake is 100% edible!

So I want to hear from YOU! What do you want to learn? I want this series to be for the complete beginner. Don’t know how to fill a pastry bag with icing? I didn’t either a year ago! Let’s learn together and have some fun!
Please leave a comment and let me know what you want to learn or need some tips on. I can’t wait to get started!

  1. I want to learn anything I need to know to make cute cakes like that, but I’ve never worked with fondant and would love to know more about it so that I’d feel more comfortable giving it a try! Also, how to do different cake shapes, like do you always use a pan or do you make the shape somehow else?

  2. I love these beautiful cakes. I want to learn all about fondant! I love the look but looks sooooo hard to do!

  3. Darling,

I’ve just been referred to you today from The Generous Wife, but I already must say – I want to learn all about fondant as well! Please do the cake series :)

  4. I was just telling my hubby that I want to learn how to make cakes like these for the kids’ birthdays :) We have three ( 4 years, 2 years, and 3 months), and I know nothing, so all the help you can offer would be soooo appreciated!!

  5. Everything!! What IS the best way to fill an icing bag?? Its a miracle, but I actually have one! I would love a good recipe for fondant, and hints on the best places to pick up baking supplies on the cheap!

  6. I would love to learn anything about beginning cake decorating. I love looking at your pictures of the many cakes that you have made. I want to ba able to do the same.

  7. I don’t know much about cake decorating, although the cake-making part I’m getting fairly good at. :) I, too, would like to know more about fondant and how to work with it (that is definitely a theme here!) but I’d also like to learn about decorating cakes beautifully with simple frosting. What’s the best kind of frosting to use for making rosettes, etc? How do you best prepare the cake for decorating? What’s a good recipe for a nice, thick, stiff frosting that will hold its shape well? And that tastes good?

    …and stuff like that. :)

    I’m excited for this!!

I would love to know about fondant…I know absolutely nothing about it! Do you make it from scratch or buy it somewhere? And I love the cakes with the rosettes, they are beautiful and I would love to learn how to do that.

  9. Those cakes are fantastic!

  10. I am so excited about this! I want to learn the basics of buttercream techniques and then fondant. My desire is to make birthday cakes for my children and family.

  11. These are amazing ~ you are so talented! I would love for you to start with the basics & work from there ~ what recipe do you use for the icing & how do you make the decorations??
    Looking forward to your series
    Blessings

  13. This is going to be SUCH a great resource!!! I took cake decorating one year in 4H! SO FUN! I LOVE making cakes and decorating them although i’m not nearly as talented as you yet! LOVE all those flowers girl!!

  14. Oh my goodness Jami you are so well-rounded in your talent! I totally want to learn how to make cakes! These are amazing!

  16. Jami, you are so talented! These cakes look soooooo good–and professional!!

  17. Those cakes are gorgeous! I’ll be sticking around for this series! :)

  18. Melissa W says:

I’d like to learn about fondant too… Have been a little scared to try it. All your cakes are wonderful! Really love that strawberry cake – I’d live to know how you did that one.

  19. i also would love to be able to learn how you use fondant. i also love the cakes with what look like roses all over them! i would love to know how you do that technique! thanks so much for giving us this oppurtunity to learn your “secrets” :)

  20. I’ve never cared to learn until now!

  21. Start with the very basics, a delicious cake recipe.

  22. Your cakes look great, Jami! I had never really decorated a cake until I had kids, and then a friend of mine graciously came over to my house and gave me a crash course in cake decorating right before my son’s first birthday. I haven’t tackled fondant, yet, though, although I think I will give it a whirl for his 4th birthday coming up in October. I want to try the marshmallow fondant.

  23. Ok, I’m going to be honest here. I HATE to bake! Love to cook, but baking just isn’t my cup of tea. However, if I could make cakes look like that, I may have a different outlook! :) But, as a homeschooling mom, I think it would be great for my daughter and I to learn to bake/decorate cakes together. She would have a blast!

  25. I think starting with the basics would be perfect and then working up to the more difficult techniques. I have never filled a pastry bag with icing before– so definitely basics first. I love your cakes! Can’t wait to start baking and decorating!

  26. The third cake you posted, the purple one… I want to learn how to make that crazy-smooth frosting! Also the basket-weave. Also the candy flowers. Also using piping bags… LOL I am new at this! help!

  27. Buttercream recipe. And a rundown of basic tools needed for caking.

  28. I would LOVE to learn how to make cakes like that!

  29. Hey Jami,

I’ve been following your blog for a little while now & really enjoy it. I am not a very good baker but would love to learn. The extent of my cake backing is usually a box of cake mix some frosting in a tub and some sprinkles or candies arranged on top. Hows that for a beginner :)

    Looking forward to the series!

    • I’m glad you stopped by Becky! Thank you :D Until a year ago, that was my idea of cake decorating too! And I never thought I liked cake until I started making my own!

  30. I am so excited to find your blog! I was looking for cake decorating ideas and it seems I may have found a sister in Christ, too!

  31. I want to learn the basic and the fundamentals of icing and decorating. How to fill a pastry bag, decorating tips and patterns, fondant icing, how to make flower patterns, basket patterns, how to produce a smooth icing / decorating finishing.
    Plsssss help !!!
    Its veryyyyyy urgent !!

  32. You have “re-awakened” my love of cake decorating! I’d love to get on board the new cupcake trend! Any ideas and creative flavor combinations would be appreciated! Also, like so many others, I’d love to learn more about fondant. The few cakes decorated with fondant that I’ve eaten really turned me against using it. To me the fondant was like chewing gum…thick, chewy and tasteless. I would love to learn more about it, and maybe my “fondant aversion” will change! Thanks!

  33. I want to learn from scratch, the basics. I am so eager to know more and to share the fun in it. Pls help cos i hv no idea what so ever. I need this lessons!
